What’s this project about?
It’s showing faces of Gaysians (LGBTQ South Asian backgrounds) from all over the world. All it is – a simple head shot and asking them who they are.
Where will this project be shown?
On social media channels (Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram) and eventually make it into a free ebook for people to download.
Do I need to be “Out” in order to participate?
No. You can wear a mask or disguise your face in some way, your safety is important to us.
Will I get paid?
No. This is a volunteer project. But a pretty cool one (we don’t mean to brag)
What will the final product look like?
Depending if you’re out of not.
How can I be a part of this project?
1. Take a headshot of yourself like the photos above
2. write on a piece of paper who you are and scan it
3. email it to us at firstname.lastname@example.org (please be sure to type out what you wrote on the paper so we quote it correctly)
If you live in the UK, please email us. We do monthly shoots in West London.
I’m not Queer, can I still be a part of this project?
We welcome allies and you’re more than welcome to submit your photo/quote. We will use it at a later date.
I’m Queer but not South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi) background, can I still participate?
Again, we welcome all participants as long as your comfortable being under the Gaysian brand. But we will use your photo at a later date.
Why do you call this an anthropology photography project?
Because we are taking pictures of folks across all South Asian backgrounds who are Queer. We are answering an age old question – you’re not alone – look at these faces. It’s been said the Gaysian community is a minority within a minority, this project is going to explore that through photography and the individual’s creativity.
What’s the inspiration behind the project?
This book – Part Asian/100% Hapa, by Kip Fulbeck. If anthropology or culture is something you like…definitely check out this book!
Any other questions?
Feel free to email us – email@example.com. We’re here to help you make the most out of this project! Thank you for your interest and participation.
